I consider myself a crafty mom. I enjoy making things from scratch because handmade foods and items just seem more meaningful to give as gifts. Normally I barely notice Valentine’s day is here, but this year was different. We had a Great Grandmother (97 years old!) in the hospital (she’s out now 🙂 but we wanted to do something nice for her ) and this is my first year home schooling my children. It was the perfect storm for going craft crazy! We spent the entire day before Valentine’s Day making our cards, Paleo Zucchini Brownies and chocolate covered strawberries and then had to find something pretty to package them in.
Being a mom, I always have a ton of egg cartons on hand. Luckily I had one 18 egg sized cardboard paper mache kind (cannot use styrofoam with the gold paint, it eats right through it, which was a whole other fun science experiment) and a can of gold spray paint from another project. So, my two sons and I grabbed the egg carton, some newspaper to put the carton on and of course the spray paint. You will want to do this in a well ventilated area (outside is ideal) because the paint smell is really stinky and I’m sure, dangerous to inhale.
Lay the egg carton down, spray nice and evenly, inside and out. Let the carton dry until it doesn’t have a noxious paint smell, which doesn’t take long. Once completely dry, line with Saran wrap and set your berries in. I then added another piece of Saran wrap over the berries to make sure they didn’t get any paint smell or rub off from the gold paint on them.
Top off your lovely homemade confection with some pretty handmade cards and give yourself a pat on the back for being so darn thoughtful 🙂
